Manior de Grandouet – Cidre Fermier BRUT

Manoir de Grandouet Cidre Fermier Brut

ABV 5%

From the website: ”Ce cidre brut, élaboré avec la même méthode de fabrication que le cidre AOC est réservé aux amateurs de cidre plus fermenté, les variétés de pomme étant moins fruitées. ” OR as I translated with my broken French; “Our brut Cider is made with the same process of manufacturing as our AOC, it is reserved for Cider lovers, with more fermented apple varieties making it less fruity”. Or something like that…

  • Appearance: Cloudy, Nearly Amber.
  • Aroma: Fresh Fruit, Smoke, Slight Vinegar
  • Taste: Sweet, Smoke, Nice Balance of Tart.
  • Mouthfeel: Nice micro bubbles.

Background: Manior de Grandouet is a Cidery based in Pays d’Auge, Normandy, France. Although this Cider doesn’t carry the AOC (appellation d’origine control) designation, some of their other Ciders do. The Pays d’Auge Cider region is recognized around the world as being an excellent environment for the production of Apples. And as you probably know, the French pride themselves on being Food & Beverage people and this is an example of such pride.

First Taste is:  “Wow, this is really good”. The effervescence hits you right away.  The start is profoundly sweet with a nice smokey finish. There is a nice balance here with an understated Cider Apple Flavour. It’s not in your face, but it’s there. No drama, just a really subtle smooth Cider for Cider Lovers. Perfect. Real Cider!

What’s in it? No ingredients are listed other than Sulphites. But it has floaties. I do love my floaties.

Cidre Fermier

Overall: It’s a really nice example of a French Farmhouse Cider. True to the French Style it has a subtle flavour profile with a distinct sweetness. If you haven’t had a French Cider before then I would seriously search this one out. Or anything from Pays d’Auge region in Normandy, France. That’s where the good stuff is.

Would I buy it again? Yes, it’s a fantastic Cider. My wife after trying it said, “oh, get that one again. It’s good!”. I’ll probably buy it again, but with so many other Ciders to review it may be not for a while.

Rating: 8 out of 10

Where to get it? This was picked up at Legacy Liquor Store. Can’t remember exact cost, but I believe it was round $14.00 for a 750ml bottle.

X-Factor – When looking at the website I noticed that you can buy a bottle for 2.80 Euro. I immediately thought about how to get them to send me a case.

Full Disclosure – This is first of two Ciders I plan to review from Manior de Grandouet. The second is the Chambremer Cidre de Tradition.
